Czech translation

Czech is a West Slavic language of the Czech-Slovak group, with over 13 million speakers. It is also the official language of the Czech Republic.

Five interesting facts about the Czech language:

1. Czech used to be known as Bohemian, i.e. the language of Bohemia, which is a region of the Czech Republic today.

2. Several Czech words have made it into English, including ‘dollar’, ‘pistol’, ‘robot’ and ‘polka’.

3. Czech is mutually intelligible with Slovak.

4. Czech includes some words that don’t contain any vowels.

5. The language almost disappeared in the 17th century due to the Hapsburgs forcing the people of Bohemia to speak German in public.
