Indonesian translation

Indonesia belongs to the Austronesian language family, along with languages such as Tagalog, Māori, Samoan and many others.

Indonesian is a standardised version of the Malay language.

Five interesting facts about the Indonesian language:

1. Indonesian is the 10th most spoken language in the world with close to 200 million speakers.

2. Standard Indonesian was made the official language of Indonesia in 1945.

3. Over 700 languages are spoken in Indonesia, of which Indonesian is the lingua franca.

4. Indonesian does not have grammatical genders.

5. The Indonesian language has adopted many loanwords from other languages including Arabic, Sanskrit, Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch.
