Latvia

Latvian is an East Baltic language spoken primarily in Latvia, where it has been the official language since 1918.

It belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family of languages.

Five interesting facts about the Latvian language:

1. There are three Latvian dialects: the Livonian dialect, High Latvian and the Middle dialect.

2. Approximately 1.3 million people speak Latvian worldwide.

3. Latvian uses the Latin alphabet.

4. The first known example of written Latvian dates from 1530 and was a translation of a hymn by Nikolaus Ramm, a German pastor.

5. Latvian is an inflected language and has two grammatical genders.
