Macedonian translation

Macedonian is an Eastern South Slavic language.

It is the first language of around two million people and the official language of North Macedonia, with a smaller number of speakers throughout the rest of the region of Macedonia.

Five interesting facts about the Macedonian language:

1. The Macedonian language, or Makedonski Jazik, is most closely related to Bulgarian and is written in the Cyrillic alphabet.

2. The first texts found in Macedonian are tenth-century religious codices, written in Glagolitic script.

3. The name ‘Macedonia’ is the oldest surviving name of any European country.

4. Up until the middle of the 20th century, Macedonian was mainly a spoken language, so nationals weren’t able to write it down as there was no standardized form.

5. The first official Macedonian grammar was published by Krume Kepeski in 1946.
