Swedish in Sweden

Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken by about 10 million people and is the official language of Sweden, and one of the official languages of Finland. 

Five interesting facts about the Swedish language:

1. Swedish is derived from Old Norse.

2. Several Swedish words have made it into the English language such as ‘moped’, ‘pedal’ and ‘ombudsman’.

3. Swedish shares similarities with Danish and Norwegian and are mutually intelligible.

4. ‘Sverige’, which is the Swedish word for ‘Sweden’, translates to ‘our kingdom’ and got its name from the Svear people around 2,000 years ago.

5. The Swedish alphabet has 29 letters. It has the same letters as English, but with three extra vowels.
